Herma has unveiled HERMAlucent (grade 140), a new recyclable self-adhesive label material that allows paper-based labels to achieve the same semi-transparent appearance traditionally associated with film. The innovation supports Design for Recycling guidelines and the forthcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) by enabling sustainable paper-on-paper combinations.

Until now, brand owners have often relied on transparent or semi-transparent films for seal labels because of their discreet appearance and elegant finish. HERMAlucent provides these same benefits while eliminating the common paper–film mix, meaning packaging and labels can be disposed of together in the paper recycling stream.

“Film is still frequently used for seal labels, even when the packaging itself is made of paper or cardboard,” says Hendrik Kehl, product manager at HERMA. “HERMAlucent avoids this undesirable combination. Packaging and label can be recycled together, which is a clear advantage with the upcoming PPWR. The semi-transparent look also ensures that labels remain visually discreet.”

The pulp used for HERMAlucent is sourced from FSC-certified forestry operations and other controlled sources. The material is paired with HERMA’s 62Z adhesive, a versatile all-rounder that performs strongly even on rough or curved surfaces, while also adhering well to plastics and packaging films if required. Resistant to ageing, heat, and light, adhesive 62Z ensures product safety and performance across a wide range of seal label applications.

“Our customers benefit from a practical solution that meets stringent safety standards while also supporting greater sustainability,” Kehl adds.
